TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My teaching philosophy aims to cultivate critical thinking through the active questioning of one’s social world. This focus on active learning through self-critique and reflection of one’s political and social contexts is informed by my strategy of learning with the student (Ranciere 1991). Instead of a banking education (Freire 1970) that requires students to be passive recipients, I co-create safe conditions with and for students to think critically about socio-cultural norms, politics, and histories, and to generate radical ways of relating within and beyond the classroom.

This focus on ways of relating is both a critique of traditional Euro-American ways of producing knowledge and a major concern of Indigenous theories and philosophies. I aim to equip students with the ethics of research and the practice of responsible relation-building. This will require a re-evaluation of classical social theories and students’ beliefs on knowledge and self. Within critical Indigenous philosophies, there is no neutral position in a deeply interconnected world. I equip students with the tools to examine how they relate to various topics within this globally interdependent world. This provides the foundation for students to truly understand the importance of respect towards specific communities and local perspectives on the ground when students are engaged in impact projects.
